The Crow: Avid Recut

I am a dedicated fan of the 1994 oriignal of The Crow. Being introduced to Bruce Lee as a child, I was devastated when his son, Brandon, tragically died on set while filming The Crow. It was an eerie experience watching it in the cinema when released in 1994 knowing Brandon had passed away - yes I saw it in the cinema back then!

I avoided the sequels and still have not watched them to this day, but the 2024 remake caught my interest when I saw the first trailer and learned Bill Skarsgård was playing the title role. It looked dark, and violent, and perhaps that is saying something about me but I was keen to watch it.

There is a lot to like, but there was also a lot that left me disappointed in remake of The Crow.

I didn't feel it was necessary to explain how Eric and Shelly met. They were a couple in love at the beginning of the original and it was perfectly acceptable, so I removed the institute sequence completely in this version. In editing this we learn about Shelly's past as Eric learns about it, without any pre exposition of how Shelly has ties to Vincent Roeg.

I also did not like the addition of the Kronos character. No explanation was needed in the 94 original of how Eric becomes the Crow, so I completely removed Kronos which allowed for Eric to become the Crow straight away. Eric's gradual transition was non-sensical in the theatrical release, as he was killed but did not become the Crow until later in the movie. In this version he dies and becomes the Crow.

The Avid Recut of The Crow 2024 comes in at one and a half hours, so the pace is tighter than the theatrical release and I feel now focuses on the key story more. It is rendered in h.265 with AAC 5.1 surround sound.
